Fiber Art

Joanne Staley has been creating fiber art for over 60 years, exploring a range of techniques including knitting, crochet, felting, weaving, batik, tie dye, basket making, and mixed media using fibers like paper. Her passion for fiber arts and her desire to share her knowledge with others has led her to teach fiber arts to children of all ages as Alabama's "Artist in Residence" for the Alabama State Council of the Arts.

Many of Joanne's fiber creations are freeform abstractions, while others refer to Biblical stories. Her work often incorporates natural Alabama fibers that are hand-dyed with plants from the region. She has exhibited her off-loom woven creations at various institutions, including the Columbia Seminary in Atlanta, the Montgomery Museum of Fine Art, Troy University, Auburn University, and numerous art galleries and churches in Alabama.

Joanne's favorite fiber works are those that tell a story or give a moral lesson. Her works are colorful, attention-arresting, three-dimensional, and intricately detailed. She often incorporates mixed media into her pieces, such as clay, pine needles, metal, wool, cotton, and synthetics.

Joanne's extensive experience in fiber arts and her passion for creativity have led her to produce outstanding works that capture the imagination of all who see them. Her contribution to the field of fiber arts is truly exceptional, and her work continues to inspire others to explore the world of fiber arts, which is why Alfred University in New York has invited Joanne to conduct a fiber workshop in the fall of 2023.
